This summer we will be offering a two-week tuition-free Chinese language program that is being co-sponsored by the Confucius Institute. The classes will be Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 2:30pm, from June 17 through June 28 at Asia Institute-Crane House (1244 S. Third St., Louisville, KY 40203). Lunch, snacks, and classroom supplies will be provided.
In previous years, we have offered a program that was sponsored by STARTALK, a part of the United States National Security Agency. Other than sponsorship, we do not anticipate major changes in the type of program we present this year.
Confucius Institute is a non-profit public educational organization affiliated with the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. Their goal is to promote and teach Chinese culture and language around the world. The first Confucius Institute opened in Seoul, South Korea in 2004 and there have been hundreds more opened worldwide since then.
The Confucius Institute that is sending teachers to our program, opened in 2010 and, since then, has been placing teachers from China in K-12 schools throughout Kentucky. It serves as a regional hub for teacher training and curriculum development.
Every summer, Asia Institute-Crane House sends English teachers to China to help students there get a better understanding of our culture and to practice their language skills with native speakers. We believe that this has been a rewarding experience for both the teachers we send and the students they teach in China. The teachers who will be in our summer program classrooms are from Mainland China and are native speakers of Mandarin. We hope that this provides a similarly rich environment for our summer program students in Kentuckiana.
Register online to receive an application. You will be mailed an application that must be returned to Asia Institute-Crane House in order to be considered for admission. Space for the program is limited and applications will be reviewed on a first-come basis.
